Obituary of Paul J.W. Miller

WALLINGFORD - Paul John William Miller passed away on January 20, 2018. He was born in Williamstown, Mass on May 16, 1928.

He attended Harvard University from which he received his BA. He continued his education at Harvard and was awarded a PHD in Philosophy.  Paul served his country during the Korean Conflict in Germany, assisting with the reconstruction of that country following WWII. He was a professor of philosophy at several colleges early on in his career, but primarily taught at the University of Colorado in Boulder. He was an engaging professor and he and many of his students became life-long friends.

Around 1978 he retired and moved to Italy, “the center of civilization” as he called it. A prodigious linguist, he traveled extensively, catering to his love of art, architecture, and classical music. He had subscriptions to the Mozart festival, opera houses and other cultural events throughout Europe. Retirement for Paul was a means for him to peruse his studies and other intellectual passions. His home became a destination, where friends from Australia, the US, and other nations would meet, and use as a base for their travels. Paul was a mentor to many; some would call him “a monster of erudition”.

In 2014, as his health became more fragile, he had to leave his beloved Rome and moved to Connecticut where he resided until his death. He is survived by his nephews Lawrence and Stephen Miller, as well as his great-niece, Katherine Tsujigato and great-nephew Benjamin Miller.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Most Holy Trinity Church, 84 N. Colony St. in Wallingford, CT.  Interment with military honors will immediately follow at In Memoriam Cemetery in Wallingford, CT.  For directions, or to leave a message of remembrance, please visit www.BaileyCares.com.
