Death Certificates
A Certified Death Certificate is necessary before anything can be done. In Connecticut, death certificates are issued from the Town Clerk or Office of Vital Statistics (in larger cities) in the town where the death occurred. For your convenience, certified copies can also be obtained through the funeral home. The current cost for certified copies in Connecticut is $20 each. The first certified copy for a deceased veterans is provided at no cost.
It is a good idea to obtain multiple copies of a death certificate as most agencies require a certified certificate and not a photocopy.
