Obituary of Alison W. Codington
WALLINGFORD Alison W. Codington, formerly of 426 South Main Street, Wallingford, died Christmas Day at Skyview Health Center, where she had been a resident since May 1992. She was the first wife of the late Russell Edward Codington.
She was born in East Haven, April 9, 1917, to Alison Lynn & George McLellan. Due to her mothers early death, she was adopted by close family friends, the late Oscar & Sarah Bates Whitehead.
She was a lifelong resident of Wallingford and a member of the First Baptist Church.
In 1940, she graduated from Aurora College, Aurora, IL, with a major in English and minor in Botany. Until her retirement in 1989, she was manager of the Choate-Rosemary Hall Alumni Records department. With her colleague, the late Barbara Hogan, she founded and edited the Employees Express, a newsletter for Choate-Rosemary Hall employees.
A gifted amateur photographer, she loved to photograph nature studies, especially New England flora and fauna, and portraits of her family and many friends. She also spent many hours hiking the Connecticut woodlands and was an avid cross-country skier. A love of literature inspired her poem- and sonnet-writing. She loved classical music and played piano and recorder. Her Scottish heritage was important to her, and she often attended the Highland Games at Loon Mountain, NH.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. Many Skyview staff and residents became dear friends during her last 17 years there. Her family is deeply grateful for the loving care she received.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Lee Codington of Lowell, MA, one granddaughter, Cleste Aime Codington-Lacerte of Arlington, MA, cousins: Myrtle (Totsie) Bruce of East Haven and Iva June Watkins of Manchester, CT, and one niece, Eunice Lynn Handloser of Santa Barbara, CA.
