Obituary of Erma Engel
WALLINGFORD - Erma B. Engel, 90, of Ashlar Village, Wallingford, died peacefully Sept. 17 at Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford, CT. She was the beloved wife of Frank Engel, Jr. for 69 years, and the loving mother of Peggy (Peter) Rae of Hamden CT, Linda (Donald) Winter of McLean VA, and Thomas Engel of Medford MA. Erma is also survived by grandsons Benjamin (Amber) Winter, Andrew Rae, and Jonathan Winter, and by great-grandchildren Addie, Owen, and Barrett Winter. She was pre-deceased by her son Frank Engel III and her sister Hazel Booth.
Erma was born in Pittsburgh PA, daughter of Ralph and Margaret Booth. Shortly after receiving her BS in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, she and Frank married and set about raising a family. For many years, they resided in Pittsburgh, where Erma enthusiastically participated in her childrens activities as a Cub Scout den mother, Brownie leader, and Girl Scout troop leader. In 1962, the family moved to Belmont MA. A lover of books and reading, Erma found the perfect job at the Belmont Public Library, where for 12 years she was assistant to the Librarian in the Childrens Room. She was a member of PEO and of the Paperweight Collectors Association. Always civically involved, she was an active member of Payson Park Church and, with Frank, opened their home to foreign students from Boston-area colleges and seminaries, providing home-cooked meals and good conversation to many visitors. In her post-retirement years, she was an AARP Tax Counselor for the Elderly for the Watertown and Belmont Councils on Aging, where she and Frank were well-known for their skillful assistance in tax return preparation. Erma loved working with her hands and was a talented seamstress, milliner, and weaver, as well as a fine gardener whose backyard garden supplied the family with beautiful roses and tasty vegetables all summer long.
A memorial service celebrating Ermas life will be held at Ashlar Village at a time to be announced. For more information or to leave a remembrance, please visit www.bcbailey.com.
