Obituary of Irene Farkas Spokes
WALLINGFORD - Irene Farkas Spokes, 90, of Wallingford, beloved wife of the late Arthur Spokes, departed this life on Friday, August 14, 2009 at the Masonic Healthcare Center.
Irene was born on September 27, 1918 in Detroit, MI daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (Nagy) Farkas. She moved with her family to Wallingford from West Virginia and lived on South Orchard Street for over 70 years. She revered her neighborhood relationships, especially with Carol Moran and her family. She was educated locally in Wallingford. As a young girl , she worked as a housekeeper for Choate School families and developed her domestic skills into an art form. Irene became renowned for her baked goods, especially the chocolate chip and macaroon cookies that she generously shared with family and friends. She also wisely dispensed old world health advice and remedies that stood the test of time.
She and her sisters walked to work for many years for local manufacturing plants, most notably Stanley Judd. She maintained friendships with co-workers that lasted over 60 years.
For fun, Irene savored group outings to Savin Rock and New York City, and enjoyed visits with family in New Jersey. She and her twin sister, Liz, often made road trips with their husbands to Florida. In later years she was an award-winning member of TOPS (Take Pounds Off Sensibly) and joined the group in a big breakfast after weigh-ins.
She was cherished as "Aunt Irene" to two generations of her family and never missed a chance to celebrate a birthday or acknowledge an accomplishment.
Survived by her nieces and families, all of Wallingford: Melissa Edwards and her children, Kimberly Lohr and Kevin Lohr and his fiance Melissa Swift. Georgian Lussier and her husband, Bill Lussier, their daughter Kate. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Bernice Farkas, of Wallingford. She is preceded in death by her twin sister, Elizabeth and her husband, Everett (Buster) Edwards; sister Kay Farkas and brother, George Farkas.
Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday, August 18th from 12:00 (NOON) until 1:00 PM. A funeral service will follow at 1 PM in the Chapel of B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S.
