Obituary of Harriet Ellis Penniman Hall
Harriet Ellis Penniman Hall, 97, died May 7, 2009 at her home in Hanover, NH. Born in Wallingford, CT on Feb. 17, 1912, Penny was the daughter of Harry Fisher Penniman and Mae Pender Penniman. She was valedictorian of the Wallingford High School class of 1929 and received a B.S. in music education from Ithaca College in 1933, also as valedictorian. She was married to the late Almon Blakeslee Hall, president of Hall Brothers Hatchery, Inc., from 1947 to his death in 1974. She was employed by Hall Brothers for over 40 years and took over operating the company when her husband was no longer able to do so. Later, she also worked for the Evergreen Cemetery Association in New Haven, CT, retiring at the age of 83.
She was Past Worthy Matron of the former Mizpah Chapter #37 O.E.S. in Wallingford, CT, Past Royal Matron of Westwood Court #5 O of A in Meriden, CT and Past Worthy Advisor of Rainbow Assembly #11 Order of Rainbow for Girls in Meriden, CT. She had a lifelong love of choral music and sang in the New Haven Chorale and the Redeemer Oratorio Choir (now the New Haven Oratorio Choir) for a number of years. She was a member of St. John�s Episcopal Church in North Haven, CT, where she resided for many years with her family prior to moving to Ashlar Villlage in Wallingford, CT in 1986. She moved to Wheelock Terrace in Hanover, NH in 2008.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah J. Hall and James C. Woods of Norwich, VT and Cynthia H. and Ronald B. Stein of Decatur, GA, three grandsons, Nicholas Barrett Stein of Jupiter, FL, Zachary Hall Stein of Decatur, GA and Cameron Penniman Woods of Norwich, VT, and one granddaughter, Donna A. Brat of Decatur, GA.
Burial will take place in In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford, CT. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 15 at 11:00 AM at St. Barnabas� Episcopal Church, Norwich, VT. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in her name, to the Wheelock Terrace Employees� Fund, 32 Buck Road, Hanover, NH 03755 or to the Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut, P.O. Box 70, Wallingford, CT 06492.
