Obituary of Hal Levy

Harold C. (Hal) Levy, 61, passed away Thursday, July 24, after a courageous battle with cancer. Levy had a 32-year career in sportswriting and has been at the Shore Line Newspapers for 29 years, serving as Executive Sports Editor for many years. He was born in New York City to the late Monroe and Janet Levy. He grew up in Middletown and was an alumnus of Woodrow Wilson High School where he served as Sports Editor of the school newspaper, the Margray. He was also an alumnus of the University of Connecticut, where he served as Sports Editor of the UConn Daily Campus. Levy was a veteran of the United States Army. He is survived by his sister Sara Kobylenski and her husband Ron of Vermont, and his sister Charlotte Harrison and her husband Russ of Meriden. He is also survived by his nephew Scott Kobylenski and his wife Katie, his niece Ann Kobylenski, his niece Karen Zak and his great nephew, Jonathan Spafford, and by his niece Amy Carpenter and her husband Jeffrey and a great niece, Jaidyn Carpenter. Levy served as an officer of the Connecticut Sportswriters Alliance and as a volunteer and officer of the Coginchaug Regional High School Benchwarmers, the school's sports booster club. In lieu of flowers please make any memorial contributions to either of these organizations. In addition, Hal was a founding father and active member of the Middlesex County over-40 men's softball league. He was an ASA umpire as well. He served as the official scorer for many Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) High School Baseball Tournaments and for Regional and National American Legion Baseball Tournaments. He also served the CIAC in a variety of other capacities, including writing CIAC publications and supervising the press box at the high school football championship games in West Haven. In addition to writing for The New York Yankees Magazine, he was the territory manager and columnist for the online publication MaxPreps. He was a member of the Connecticut High School Coaches' Hall of Fame, the New England Press Association Hall of Fame, the Connecticut Collegiate and Scholastic Softball Hall of Fame, the Branford Sports Hall of Fame, the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame and the Shoreline Conference Cross Country Hall of Fame. Calling hours will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm Street, Wallingford. Cremation will be at the convenience of the family.
