Obituary of Janet Crump
Wallingford - Janet Hall Crump, 89, of Wallingford, beloved wife of Charles Crump, entered Eternal Rest on Sunday, July 6, 2008 at Skyview Medical Center in Wallingford.
Janet was born on August 10, 1918 in Wallingford, daughter of the late Samuel Ellsworth and Agnes Biggs Hall and grew up with her brothers and sisters, Lydia, Francis, Aaron, and Luther on the family farm on Whirlwind Hill. She attended the Muddy River School, a one room schoolhouse near her home, Simpson School, and Lyman Hall High School, from which she graduated in 1936. Her childhood on the farm instilled in her a lifelong love and knowledge of the animals, birds, and plants of New England. In 4H she perfected her cooking skills, learning to make perfect powder milk biscuits baked in a wood burning stove. She was a star athlete in high school, competing and winning trophies in track events.
After high school she attended Mount Holyoke College and Boston Unversity, where she concentrated on art. She was an accomplished watercolorist, passing her love of art along to her daughter, Carol, an artist in Anchorage, Alaska.
Before her marriage to Charles G. Crump in 1943, she worked as office manager for the Wallingford Water Company, helping to build the MacKenzie Reservoir on the site of the former Muddy River School. After daughter Carol was born in 1945, and son Kirt in 1950, she stayed at home to raise her children and do volunteer work in the Wallingford Commmunity. In 1988 she was honored for her 25 years of uninterrupted service to Gaylord Hospital, where she volunteered in the Hospital Gift Shop.
She and her husband Charlie raised quarter horses on thier Whirlwind Hill property, traveled to Wyoming, Montana, California, Florida, Europe, and to Alaska to visit Carol and her family. Starting in 1973, when her grandson Paul was born, Janet went to visit him and his sister Mara in Alaska at least once a year. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, beloved for her delicious lemon meringue and berry pies, her way with animals, and her great sense of humor. In her later years, when she could no longer travel ,she focused her attention on birds and animals, and was especially interested in the effort to draw bluebirds back to the area.
Janet is survived by her husband Charles of Whirlwind Hill, son Kirt of Madison, daughter Carol and husband Alex Bryner of Anchorage, Alaska, grandchildren, Paul Bryner of Anchorage, Mara Bryner of Portland, Oregon, two great grandchildren, Henry and Stephen, and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
