Obituary of Elliot Himberg

Elliot Himberg, age 92 and a resident of Groton during the last years of his life, passed away, June 23, 2008. He was born in New Britain, Connecticut, graduated from New Britain HS, and served as an infantryman and an air reconnaissance photographer in the Army Air Corps during WWII. As one of the first members of the US occupation forces to enter Japan after the war, he witnessed and documented the impacts of nuclear weapons on the inhabitants of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war he entered the wholesale photography business, and was promoted to Northeast Regional Sales Manager for the Raygram Corporation. He eventually retired from the Nikon Corporation in 1983 and founded Newprod, Inc. where he designed and patented photographic accessories and other items. Mr. Himberg was active in the Sphinx Bedouin Shrine Club of Eastern Connecticut and served an officer of Somerset- St. James Lodge, No. 34 A.F. & A.M. He also enjoyed music and theatre, performing as part of the Clankers jug band, and in variety shows at the Groton Senior Center. His first marriage to the late Ethel Shapiro Himberg ended in divorce. His second wife, Alice Lorinsky Himberg, of Norwich, CT, also preceded him in death. He is survived by his sons from his first marriage, Harvey Himberg of Chevy Chase, Maryland; Philip Himberg of Santa Monica, California; and three granddaughters, Julia Himberg, Amy Himberg and Fanny Rose Ballantine-Himberg. The family is holding a private ceremony. Anyone wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to make a donation to the Shriners Hospitals for Children www.shrinershq.org/hospitals. The Wallinford Cremation Service has been entrusted with arrangements.
