Obituary of William H. Greenbacker
MERIDEN - William H. Greenbacker, 94, formerly of Murdock Ave., departed this life on April 29, 2016 peacefully at home with his family. He was the loving husband of the late Alice (Maloney) Greenbacker. They were happily married for 45 years.
He was born on the family dairy farm in Meriden on June 12, 1921, the son of the late Charles and Isabel Francis Greenbacker.
Until his retirement, he worked for the Colonial Bank and then for Thurston Foods. He was a lifelong member of the Center Congregational Church in Meriden where he had served as chairman of the business committee and treasurer, the Meriden Rotary Club, where he was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow and had been past president, and later the Wallingford Rotary Club. As a member of Rotary, he and his wife had hosted numerous exchange students at their home. In addition to his Rotary involvement, he also served as past master of the Meriden Grange, and past president and past treasurer of the Child Guidance Clinic in Meriden. He was a member of the consulting committee for the Vo-Ag Department of Lyman Hall High School in Wallingford for over 30 years and chairman of the committee for 10 years. During his retirement, in addition to being a member the Meriden Y's Men Club, he also enjoyed spending time in his garden and shared his fruits, vegetables and flowers with his family and friends. His greatest legacy will be that of a loving father, grandfather, and loyal friend to many.
He is survived by his daughter, Florence Greenbacker Fournier (and her husband Jeff) of Meriden, 5 grandchildren: Matthew, Katherine and Sara Fournier of Meriden and Amanda and Jared Greenbacker of Bristol; and and a sister, Julia Falk of Madison, Virginia. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who brought him great joy during family gatherings and events. He was predeceased by a son, Paul William Greenbacker and his three brothers: Herbert, Charles and John Greenbacker.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, May 28th at 10:30 AM at Center Congregational Church, 474 Broad Street, Meriden. There are no calling hours. Burial at Walnut Grove Cemetery will be private. If friends so desire, it is suggested that contributions in his memory be directed to Center Congregational Church. The B.C.
