Obituary of Ruth Horan
Ruth (Gray) Boyd Horan, 89, of Wallingford, beloved wife of Philip Horan and widow of Dr. Robert B. Boyd, departed this life on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at Connecticut Hospice of Branford, surrounded by her loving family.
Ruth was born on November 22, 1918, in Woonsocket, RI, daughter of the late John and Alice (Naylor) Gray.
Ruth graduated from the Rhode Island School of Nursing and was employed at the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence until her husband returned from service in Europe in World War II. In 1946, Dr. Boyd started a general medical practice in Wallingford where they raised their family. Ruth was an active volunteer, serving as a Girl Scout Leader and a member of the boards of the VNA, the Wallingford Public Library, and the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford. When her children were grown, she returned to work for Planned Parenthood and later became a real estate agent, associated with McLaughlin Real Estate Agency.
Ruth wed Philip Horan in 1995, and they enjoyed traveling the world together in the years that followed. Mr. Horan's watchful and tender care allowed her to stay at home during her final months.
Ruth was a loving and tireless mother, known as "Sarge" to her children and their friends. As her nickname suggests, she was a strong-minded and intelligent woman, who dispensed words of wisdom to countless souls during her 89 years. Her family and friends will sorely miss her counsel.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Kristine(Wilfred)Boyd Gilman of ME, Nancy (David)Boyd Grant of NJ and VT, Robert (Shelley) Boyd Jr. of Cheshire, Jennifer Boyd (Wilder Gleason) of Norwalk, and David Boyd of NY, in addition to her brothers, Walter Gray of RI, and Robert Gray of VA and their families. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Adam, Alice, Amy, Ben, Dan, Emma, Lauren, Lucian, Nancy, Rob, and Sara, 9 great grandchildren, and 2 step daughters, Jane Johnson of NH and Pamela Krison of NY and their families. A third brother, John Gray of VA, predeceased her.
A Eucharistic Funeral Service celebrating Ruth's life will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at 1:00 PM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in Wallingford. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours; the family will receive relatives and friends following the service in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Paul's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 145 North Main St, Wallingford, CT 06492.
