Obituary of Alfred Willcox

Alfred B. Willcox, 81, departed this life on May 15, 2007 at the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford. He was the beloved husband of Shirley (Beckwith) Willcox. He was born on September 18, 1925 in Sioux Rapids, IA, a son of the late Reverend Edward and Ruth (Drake) Willcox. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University and served as a professor of mathematics at Amherst College from 1953 ? 1968. He served as the executive director of the Mathematical Association of America in Washington, DC from 1968 until his retirement in 1990. He was the author and co-author of numerous math textbooks. Dr. Willcox was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy. He was active in the Bethesda United Church of Christ in Maryland and was a member of the First Congregational Church of Wallingford. A lover of travel, he journeyed by sail with his wife eight times to the Bahamas. Alfred and Shirley met in the Center Church choir in New Haven in December 1945, and they continued to sing in choirs and choral groups wherever they lived, including the Paul Hill Chorale in DC and the Cathedral Choir in Uppsala, Sweden. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, David and his wife Ellen of Urbana, IL, Mark and his wife Karen of Minnetonka, MN, Peter and his wife Kay of Upper Montclair, NJ, Daniel and his wife Kim of Chattanooga, TN; a sister, Barbara Willcox Schott and her husband Frank of Ridgewood, NJ, a brother, the Rev. W. Brewster Willcox and his wife Mary Ellen of Muskegon, MI; and seven grandchildren, Michael (Liz), Scott, Laura, Stanton, Joshua, Katherine, Emma and many other beloved family members and friends. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, June 1, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the Activities Room at Ashlar Village in Wallingford, CT. There are no calling hours. Burial at Beaverdale Cemetery in Hamden will be private.
