Obituary of Donald Warner
Donald F. Warner, 90, of Wallingford passed away peacefully on April 11. Mr. Warner was born to Hattie and George Warner in New Milford, CT on July 1, 1916 and resided for a short time in Waterbury and West Hartford before settling permanently in Wallingford in 1952.
He is predeceased by his wife Alyce whom he married on December 31st, 1941. He served as a medical corpsman in field hospitals in World War II when he participated in the Battle of Normandy, the Liberation of Paris and the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the French Croix de Guerre. Subsequently, he graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy and owned Stimpson's Turnpike Pharmacy until his retirement in 1980. He could be frequently found giving help and advice to the sick as part of his business and also served as an able supporter of his wife Alyce in her operation of a clinic for unwed mother's at Meriden-Wallingford Hospital. He was an avid dancer, world traveler, gardener and raconteur.
Active in the Rotary Club of Wallingford, Mr. Warner served as its president and was awarded Rotarian of the Year in 1978. In retirement, he lived for the past four years at Ashlar Village where he enjoyed the company of many friends.
Mr. Warner is survived by a daughter, Donna Lange of Fairfield and two sons, David Warner of St. Thomas USVI and Guy Warner of Washington D.C and his good friend Blanche Newman of Ashlar Village. He is also survived by four grand children, Susan Koba of Virginia Beach, VA, Sean Lange of Monroe, CT and Chester and Winifred Warner of Washington D,C. and two great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Ashlar Village Activity Room on April 19th at 10:30 AM (Because of construction at Ashlar, follow signs to Meadowood and park in parking lot E.) In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mr. Warner's honor be sent to The Specialty Shop Scholarship Fund, C/o of Ashlar Village, Cheshire Rd. PO Box 70, Wallingford, CT. 06492. The B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St., Wallingford has been entrusted with the arrangements.
