Obituary of Charlotte Collins
She was born in Wallingford, May 30, 1919 a daughter of the late Herbert A. and Charlotte Barton Crump.
Charlotte was a graduate of Wallingford High School, class of 1937 and was active in class activities. She graduated from Duke University as a Math/Economics Major, class of 1941 and graduate of Columbia University with a Degree in Engineering. During World War II she was a employed as an aircraft engineer with Grumman Aircraft on Long Island and met her husband, who was in the Navy thanks to a train trip. She was secretary to several Wallingford School Building committees, was President of Wallingford Chamber of Commerce, active in Wallingford Symphony, active with the Wallingford Public Library, volunteered at Masonic and Ashlar Village and served as resident's fund Treasurer. She was the recipient of the Wallingford Rotary Club's Citizen of the Year award in 1985. Until her retirement, she was employed as Treasurer and Safety Director for the Town of Wallingford.
She is survived by a son, John J. Collins and his wife Kathleen of Washington, DC, two daughters, Susan Kernis and husband David of Trumbull, Jeanne Weed and husband Douglas of Wheaton, IL, a brother, Charles G. Crump and wife Janet of Wallingford and six grandchildren, John and wife Mercedes Kernis, Neil Kernis, Jamie and wife Michelle Weed, Chris and Kimberly Weed and Maureen Collins and several nieces and nephews..
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St. Burial will be at In Memoriam Cemetery, Wallingford. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. It is suggested that gifts in her memory be made to the Wallingford Public Library, 200 North Main St., Wallingford, CT 06492, or online at www.Wallingford.lioninc.org.
