Obituary of Mary Jane Smith
MERIDEN - Mary Jane Smith, formerly of Wallingford, passed away on September 19, 2017
at the age of 86. She had been residing at Miller Memorial Community, in Meriden, since 2015. She was the wife of the late Gordon Smith.
Mary Jane was born in Mannington, WV to the late Michael and Linda (Anthony) Raad. Her family moved to Norwich, CT when she was very young. After graduating from Norwich Free Academy, she worked for the Boy Scouts of America. MJ later worked for 35 years at Southern New England Telephone Company, as a Division Manager staff secretary, until her retirement. She and her husband, Gordon, enjoyed spending their winters in North Myrtle Beach, SC and traveled to Hawaii several times. They both found joy having a house full of dear friends and family. They often entertained and MJ enjoyed introducing their many friends to her Mediterranean culture and food. She was very proud of her Lebanese heritage. She had a great love of her faith and volunteered her time at the Church of the Resurrection, in Wallingford, for many years after retiring from SNET.
Mary Jane is survived by her loving sister Lorise Andersen of Old Lyme, CT and brother Edward Raad of East Hampton, CT along with their spouses, Gregory Andersen and Jean Raad. She also leaves her cherished nieces, Allison Andersen of Natick, MA, Wendy Raad and her husband Andrejs Gale of Bristol, RI, nephew, Christopher Raad and his wife Purada along with great nephew and niece, Prince and Peace Raad, all of Thailand. She was predeceased by her sisters Elizabeth and Dolores Raad and her beloved husband, Gordon Smith.
Mary Jane was a kind, loving and very generous person and will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all who knew and loved her.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 25th at B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 S. Elm Street, Wallingford at 1:00 PM. Friends may call from 12:00 - 1:00 PM. MJ will be laid to rest at In Memoriam Cemetery, in Wallingford, where she will again join her true love, Gordon.
