Obituary of Avis M. Martell

Avis M. Martell, 91, loving wife of the late John E. Martell, passed away Friday, November 16, 2018 at Miller Memorial Community in Meriden, due to complications of Parkinson’s Disease.

A longtime resident of Wallingford, she is survived by her sister Marion Taylor of Sullivan, ME, half-sister Mary Greaney of Orrington, ME, children: Wade and Christine Martell of Wallingford, Jane Scofield of Tolland, Nancy and Alan Kupferman of Queens, NY, grandchildren: Jonathan and Matthew Martell of CT, Tyler and Suzanne Milford of Austin, TX, Mia and Jay Magaletti of Tucson, AZ, Bryan and Andrew Kupferman of NY, great-grandchildren Siera and Tristan Milford, special daughters and mothers of her grandchildren, Donna Seehorst, Susan Milford and Helen Albanese, and many nieces and nephews.

During her life, Avis saw the passing of many of her loved ones: her parents Chester and Dilla Nickerson; siblings Ralph Nickerson, Vivian Gehan, Carrie Gorens, Hilda Beers, and Claude Nickerson, all originally from Hodgdon in Aroostook County, ME. She is also predeceased by her husband of 58 years John E. Martell. She lost her oldest son Tellis Martell, a grandson Ian Kupferman, son-in-law Robert Scofield, many brothers and sisters in-law from both the Martell and Nickerson families and many cherished friends.

Avis was a devoted servant of God. She was a member and past church officer of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wallingford, a volunteer at the Wallingford Senior Center, a loving caretaker of her family and a good friend to countless others. Mom enjoyed trips and activities at the Senior Center, made friends everywhere she went and always had a smile for everyone. She had a great sense of humor and often delivered her punchlines with a twinkle in her eye.

The family would like to extend our thanks to her caregivers at Miller Memorial and Beacon Hospice for their good care and compassion, and also our thanks to all who otherwise assisted in her care throughout the last several years of her illness.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church, 235 Pond Hill Road, Wallingford. There will be no public calling hours and interment will be private.
