Obituary of Norman Hough Barnes
WALLINGFORD - Norman Hough Barnes, Jr. of Ashlar Village in Wallingford passed away on September 27, 2015 at the age of 98.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Betty Barnes, his wife of almost 70 years, by his two daughters; Sally Bailey and her husband David, Barbara Ricker and her husband Robb, two sons; William Barnes and his wife Linda, and Peter Barnes and his wife Alison, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and 13 nieces and nephews.
Norman was born on March 28, 1917 in Wallingford where he resided for many years. He was a member of the Wallingford Congregational Church, and was active in town politics. Norman was a member and past president of the Connecticut Pomological Society, and was a third generation partner in the Barnes Orchards of Wallingford. He was instrumental in organizing the Greenhouse at Ashlar Village. Norman was Past Master of the Compass Lodge #9 in Wallingford and a member of Lodge #332 at Ashlar Village. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol during WWII.
In his retirement, Norman discovered his love of sailing and teaching, as a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Guilford, CT. In addition, he enjoyed hiking with the Klamberers and singing with the Sphinx Chanters.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at the Ashlar Village Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Ashlar Village Scholarship Fund or the Guilford Coast Guard Auxiliary. The B.C.
