Obituary of Jean Moran Gaffey

WALLINGFORD -Jean Moran Gaffey, wife of the late Joseph L. Gaffey of Wallingford, passed away on August 31, 2015 at Torrington Health and Rehab Center following a lengthy illness. She was born in Wallingford on the eve of Armistice Day, November 10th, 1918, the daughter of James H. Moran, Sr. and Margaret (Wrynn) Moran. She attended Holy Trinity School and graduated from Lyman Hall High School in 1936. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Connecticut College in 1940. After obtaining her teaching certificate from the University of Connecticut, she returned to Lyman Hall High School where she taught English, Public Speaking and Social Studies from 1941-1950. For many years, she also taught night classes in citizenship to newly arrived immigrants preparing for citizenship exams. With her husband Joe, she traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She especially loved Ireland and made several trips there. She was a member of the parish family at the Church of the Resurrection since its founding in 1962 and was also a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Wallingford Land Trust. She is survived by her three children, William Gaffey and his wife Jill of Durham, James Gaffey and his wife Ruth of Groton, NH and Jean Jones and her husband Brian of Winchester; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, James H. Moran, Jr. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 11AM at the Church of the Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Road in Wallingford. Interment will take place immediately following the funeral service at St. John's Cemetery in Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be forwarded to Holy Trinity School, 11 North Whittlesey Avenue, Wallingford, CT 06492. The B.C.
