Obituary of Evelyn McGaughey

Evelyn McGaughey, 91, of Wallingford, died peacefully at MidState Medical Center on Thursday, June 4, 2015, with loving family members and friends at her side. Evie was born on January 15, 1924, in New Haven, CT, daughter of the late Dr. James D. McGaughey and Helen (Cox) McGaughey. She graduated from Wallingford's North Main Street School, The Day School (a precursor to Hopkins School), and Smith College. She worked in various managerial positions at Southern New England Telephone Company (SNET) from 1946 to 1981, when she retired early and embraced the joys of living for many months of each year in the cottage she built beside Lake Winnipesaukee in Moultonborough, NH. Alongside her professional work, Evie served on the Board of Directors of both The Day School and Day Prospect Hill School. She continued to devote herself to Smith College, and she undertook multiple leadership roles for her Class of 1946 until the time of her death. In addition, Evie engaged in various community activities, serving on the Board of Directors of the Wallingford YMCA. Most recently, she thoroughly enjoyed supporting and singing in the "Vintage Voices" group, led by her dear friend Nan Thompson. Evie was widely known for her devotion to our planet earth, to the environment, and to all who inhabit this world—human, beast, bird, and fish. A life-long and faithful member of The First Congregational Church of Wallingford, Evie loved and sang in the church choir most of her adult life and devotedly maintained the church music library for decades. Throughout the course of her long membership, she also served on many church boards and committees and enjoyed being active in the church's ministry, mission, and fellowship opportunities. Evie will be sadly missed by her brother, Dr. J. David McGaughey of Wallingford; her nephew, James D. McGaughey of Mansfield; her niece, Videen McGaughey Bennett and her husband, Christopher Bennett, of Ridgefield; her niece, Heather P. McGaughey and her husband, John Wilmouth, of San Francisco; her grandnephews and niece, Dr. Jonathan D. Bennett, Molly and Samuel McGaughey, and Evan Wilmouth; many caring extended-family members and friends; and the current members of her beloved and extensive cat family, Gray, KitKat, and Talker. Relatives and friends may call on Friday, June 12, 2015, from 4:00-6:00 p.m., at B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm Street, Wallingford. Her funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2015, at The First Congregational Church of Wallingford. Interment at the In Memoriam Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Evie's memory to The First Congregational Church of Wallingford, 23 South Main Street, Wallingford, CT 06492; Animal Haven, Inc., 89 Mill Road, North Haven, CT 06473; or the Loon Preservation Committee, 183 Lees Mill Road, Moultonborough, NH 03254.
