Obituary of Clifford Corson Gilmond
WALLINGFORD - Clifford Corson Gilmond died peacefully at home on Monday, February 9th, 2015. Born August 26, 1921 in West Haven, CT to the late Percival O. Gilmond and the late Lizbeth Corson Gilmond. Cliff had fond memories of growing up in Hamden, CT. He raised his own family there and continued to live in his Hamden home for 82 years until he moved to Wallingford, CT in 2006.
Cliff served in WWII in the U.S. Army with the 379 Field Artillery 102nd Division known as the Ozark Division. He was employed by the New York, NH & H Railroad during the 1940's moving on to work as an insurance agent for the Prudential Insurance Company in the 1950's.
He was an avid stamp collector and proudly served as Secretary of the New Haven Philatelic Society as well as President of the Connecticut Philatelic Society for a time during the 1950's. In the 1960's Mr. Gilmond established The Pinnacle Coin and Stamp Company in Hamden, CT, turning his passion for stamp collecting into a business he enjoyed for the rest of his life. He was especially interested in creating special designs on envelopes used to obtain first day covers of new postage stamps. In 2006 he became the first person to be inducted to the Connecticut Cover Club Hall of Fame.
Clifford is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Nathalie (Nan) Neumann Gilmond of Wallingford, his son; Kenneth Gilmond of Hamden, sons and their wives; Russell and Doris (Baum) Gilmond of Boca Raton, FL, Donald and Joanne (Schmaltz) Gilmond of Guilford, CT, niece; Michelle Nichols of Asheville, NC, nephews; Dennis Sembenotti of IL, and Gary Hutton of TX. He was predeceased by sisters Elaine Gilmond Sembenotti and Jacquelyn Gilmond Hutton, nieces Linda Sembenotti and Joanne Sembenotti Listro.
