I just heard the news about Liz Mitchell, and am sending sympathy and love to her family and all those who miss her. She was such a special person and a wonderful, positive part of my Choate experience. She genuinely was so interested in my happiness and my growth -- and that of everyone around her! She made me feel so valued as a tour guide and as a student, and brightened the good days, lightened the hard days, and generally made life for all around her more beautiful. Grateful to have known her and grateful to have read such lovely memories.

The yellow house on South Main Street would always make me feel happy to be with Mrs Mitchell and Mr Mitchell (as I called them as a child) and my buddy Chris and Biz Sam and Ed. It's safe to say my favorite days were with the Mitchell's. Mrs Mitchell had a way of making everyone feel special and she saw the beauty in people that inspired me. When I was older and I moved out of Wallingford if my car was near South Main Street I had to pull along the hedges and visit Mrs Mitchell. She welcomed me with a smile and then we were off to the races because no one could talk like Mrs Mitchell. And I felt like I did when I was a kid - amazed by all the world she could see that I couldn't. She always inspired me. She took us out of our everyday life and taught us all how to see things through her eyes - what a wonderful gift.

Mrs. Mitchell was the first face most of us saw when entering Choate Rosemary Hall. And for so many of us, she left an indelible impression of the very best of the Choate community. Mrs. Mitchell was welcoming and kind to every person she met; she was extremely thoughtful, a tremendous communicator, and a global thinker. She turned the small red building of Squire Stanley, and later Archibald, into cherished, peaceful places on campus -- places where, no matter what was happening in your world while attending Choate, there was a cup of hot chocolate, a handful of candy corn, and a warm smile waiting for you; places where even the most nervous of 8th grade applicants could feel at home. I was blessed to take Mrs. Mitchell to garden party, to work with her for several years in the Admissions Office during school spring breaks and during college, and to always consider her a best friend, a mother, an absolute supporter, and a role model. And I know, no matter what comes after this life, she will be there waiting to greet us all and welcome us with the warmth and smiles for which she will always be remembered.

Our dear Liz Mitchell was such a kind and nurturing person and an inspiration for so many at Choate Rosemary Hall. So many parents and students have told me that when they first met Liz in the CRH admissions office, Liz's engaging personality, her genuine love for CRH, her sincere interest in a child's future and how CRH could nurture a child's life, truly helped them realize that CRH was the school for them. The WSO could not have achieved its position in the music world today without Liz's truly inspirational dedication and guidance. As President of the WSO and as a member of the Wallingford Symphony Board of Directors Liz's vision and her passion for classical music helped bring the music of the WSO into many Connecticut communities. One of Liz's greatest achievements was to insure that the WSO would present a concert for one thousand four hundred children every year for thirty-five years! We have been so blessed to know our dear Liz. We shall miss her radiant presence. We shall be eternally grateful for the legacy that Liz has given to us and we shall rejoice in knowing that her legacy will live on for many years to come.

I am very grateful that I got to know Mrs.Mitchell for so many years. I cannot think of anyone kinder. Thought many years she helped comfort and cheer many students and prospective nervous students that passed her way. Her memory was truly amazing. She never forgot a face! Her ability to connect people made everyone feel immediately at home. Mrs. Mitchell had the rare gift of making everyone who crossed her path feel as if they were the only person that mattered in the world. She personified Choate's seal words: "Fidelitas et Integritas." We will miss you a lot.

I was very sorry to hear about Mrs. Mitchell's passing the other day. In all honesty I say she was a defining part of several years of my life, and she continues to be a model for me. I can think of no other person who matched her genuine kindness and caring. Hospitable, sympathetic, motherly... my life is richer for having known her and I'm sad I won't be able to share another long, laughter-filled conversation with her. Her work ethic was outstanding and her compassion exemplary. She apparently never missed a single day of work in twenty years at Choate, as I recall from her retirement party. I'm glad Ray Diffley posted the picture of her going to work in a blizzard-I'd been on the hunt for that exact one! She will be missed dearly but her legacy lives on in the truly countless lives she has touched.

It's hard to think of many folks more enthusiastic, caring, thoughtful, dedicated, strong and honest (in a nice kind of way!) than Liz Mitchell. And I know a lot of impressive people! To do the job she did in Admission at Choate for over 20 years is simply amazing. Liz rarely sat down and if she did, you better get a picture of it because she would be back on her feet at the slightest sound to be sure everyone had the most amazing welcome to the school that she loved and dedicated herself to. I'd be hard pressed to think of another figure in the school world, anywhere on earth, who interacted more with families looking at schools over the last 20 years and most importantly, to find someone who cared so much and impressed those visitors with her interest, charm and enthusiasm for what education can do for a young person. I don't recall Liz missing one single day! of work in the 20 plus years she was here...a fact that simply amazes me. She loved to do what she did and wow was she good at it! Liz will be sorely missed at Choate and in the Wallingford community, but she knows, and her family should surely know, that she mentored, championed, supported and indeed changed the lives of countless students and parents in a career that may never be matched by generations to come.
With great respect and appreciation!

Liz was the very first person I met at Choate. We had just found out we would be joining the Choate community in the fall and I was poking my nose in for a spring visit. I felt unsure of myself since I was new and also because the events weren't really meant for me (as a Choate-spouse-to-be). Of course, Liz gave me a warm welcome at the registration table. We chatted for a while and but I liked her instantly. I can't imagine a better first impression of this place. Liz had a magnetic positivity about her -- she had a gift for putting people at ease, listening, connecting dots and relating to the people she was with. I know her presence was a gift to many people (including me) -- she just gave you the feeling that she was "on your side". I think it's especially remarkable that she made me feel this way so strongly when we barely saw each other. I didn't know Liz well, but she is somebody I can think of when I need strength to be more positive or courage to reach out to strangers. I am thankful to have known her.

Liz had such a kind a warm spirit about her. She would welcome many families at Choate day in and day out and help put them at ease as they got set for what can be an intimidating process of interviewing. I will remember hearing her sweet voice as she would call my name as she walked towards my office to alert me that my family had arrived for their interview. Every time I heard her, it would make me smile. She had the ability to put everyone at ease and was wonderful with the students. They all gravitated towards Liz and wanted to be around her. She loved Choate and we loved her. I will miss her tremendously.
