Camping, Sailing, Cooking, Enjoying life.
I remember:
5:00 am Christmas morning with Carol, and Christine, on the way to Grandma's house singing Christmas Carols.
Every Christmas, Dad would initiate a small time wrapping paper war. When he'd open a present, he would create little balls of wrapping paper and gently toss them at the rest of us. We in turn, would have to fight back. At Easter, Grandma would still be finding little balls of wrapping paper behind furniture.
Cooking Thanksgiving dinner with Dad, Carol, and Christine at Grandma's house.
We do all the cooking, then we do all the cleaning so Grandma doesn't have too.
One spring, we launched the boat and headed out to Lake Michigan. After leaving the locks a NASTY thunderstorm hit us. Heavy downpour, lightning all around us. After putting all the lines away, I made sure we were 'shipshape'. Lightning still all around us, I went back to the cockpit, to check our status. Dad was not worried about the storm. He was singing in the rain.
More stories to come.
Love you Dad.

From John's Granddaughter, Megan:
Heaven got another angel today. My amazing and brilliant, Papa John, is now watching over us. You have always been an inspiration to me, by accomplishing what you have in your 90 years of being on this earth. You always put a smile on my face and my life wouldn't have been the same without you in it. All your stories, songs, and jokes will be carried on and shared. You, Papa, are the core of our family. I wouldn't change a minute of our time spent with you. I know it was your time to leave us physically, but your strong spirit runs deep in our veins. Your blood is mine. I'll miss you more than words can explain. Rest In Peace and in our hearts.

Johnny was a true gift in every possible way to our family. He loved us all more than I can say and we equally loved him. I met John when I was 27 and he was 56. We became friends instantly. Then Emily and Haley were born. Being in Chicago alone, John, Carol and their families took us in and welcomed us like we had always been part of the family. John loved Emily and Haley in a way that I can not describe. He walked them to sleep almost every day singing to them his beautiful songs, he read to them, played with them, taught them different languages, told them many stories and helped to shape them into the wonderful young woman they are today. When John saw me, whether it was years ago or just last week, he smiled at me this special smile that, warmed my heart. I will never ever forget that smile Johnny and I will miss you forever.
To his wonderful family, thank you for sharing John with us,
With my deepest love,
Karan

"TTFN " I can hear him saying that to me, he would then ask "do you know what TTFN means?" and with a big grin he would say "Ta Ta For Now", and then explain it was from Winnie the Pooh!...I will never read or watch Winnie the Pooh again without thinking of John...will miss all those wonderful stories.
TTFN Ta Ta For Now John.
With my heartfelt sympathies...Debbie Kolb
