Obituary of Leona S. Reynolds

BARRE - Leona Virginia Scully Reynolds, age 93, died on December 24, 2013 in Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin, VT. Leona was born a "blue baby" in 1920 in Greenwich, CT, one of 6 children born to Susan and Thomas Scully. With the cord wrapped around her neck, she wasn't expected to live so her parents didn't bother naming her. Her Irish spunk prevailed, however, and they crossed off "deceased" on her birth certificate and named her Leona Virginia. She was one of 6 siblings raised in a little house on Steamboat Road in Greenwich, CT. She was a graduate of Greenwich High School. Upon graduation, she attended business and secretarial school, obtained both her CT real estate and insurance broker licenses and worked in the greater Greenwich area for 15 years. Leona loved the social scene of the 40's and 50's - when she wasn't busy traveling to Cuba, Mexico or Bermuda with her single girlfriends, she could be found in high heels and a corncob pipe in the smoky nightclubs of Harlem, NYC listening to some of jazz's legendary greats. Leona was an accomplished badminton player and competed extensively throughout New England with the CT Badminton Association where, at the "mature" age of 38, met and married her husband, Walter Reynolds. They raised their family in Wallingford, CT where she became an active volunteer with the Wallingford Art League, Masonic Home and Hospital and the school library. In 1983, Leona resumed her career as personal secretary to the legendary New Haven banker and real estate developer G. Harold Welch, one of New Haven's wealthiest businessmen at the time. Following his death, she earned many a grey hair as the staffing scheduler for the Regional Visiting Nurse Association until her retirement in 1990. She moved north to Woodridge Nursing Home in 2006 following a stroke on Friday the 13th, one of two strokes that occurred on this auspicious day. Leona is survived by her son, William Reynolds, of Warrenton, VA, her daughter Nancy Reynolds and her partner Horst Hartlieb of Burlington, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her five siblings as well as her former husband, Walter. Per Leona's wishes, there will be no memorial service. The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at Woodridge Nursing Home, St. Monica's Church and St. Augustine's Church for their dedicated and compassionate care of Leona for so many years. Donations may be made in Leona's memory to a non-profit of one's choice.\
