MIDDLETOWN - Barbara Hirst, 93, of Madison, departed this life on December 1, 2016 at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. David W. Hirst. Barbara was born in Meriden, CT on April 2, 1923 to the late John & Blanche (Thorpe) Kortum. She resided in New Jersey with her husband for many years, and worked as a secretary for the Princeton School system. Barbara was very active in her community, as she was a member of the Dames Club, Business & Professional Women's Club as well as the Investment Club of Princeton, NJ. She also served as Deacon of the Nassau Presbyterian church for 6 years. She and her husband later moved back to Connecticut, residing at Windmere Estates in Madison before moving to Hearth at Tunxis Pond. Barbara is survived by her brother Warren (Lucille) Kortum of FL., and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a brother Frederick Kortum, and a sister Viola (Harry) Riotte. A memorial service for Barbara will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at 11:00 AM, at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm St. in Wallingford. Interment will be private.
