Obituary of Janet Ellen Harris Geil
WALLINGFORD - Janet E. Harris Geil, 88, of Ashlar Village, Wallingford, formerly of Hamden, died peacefully on Friday, April 26, 2013 at Masonicare Health Center. She was the loving wife of John Sidney Geil for 68 years.
She was born in Penfield, NY to the late Charles L. Harris and Hannah S. Harris, the youngest of their six children. She and her husband were born two days and a quarter of a mile apart, attended school together from first through twelfth grade, and began dating each other in tenth grade. Janet attended Buffalo, NY State Teachers College until she went to Pratt, KS to marry John at Pratt AAB where he was stationed.
Janet was always very optimistic, generous, and gracious. A woman of great faith, she was active in church communities wherever the family lived. She enjoyed singing in musicals, choirs, and other choral groups. She worked at Howland Department Store and, until her retirement in 1990, at New Haven Savings Bank in Hamden.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by son David A. Geil of Spokane Valley, WA; daughter Sharon E. Geil of Cheshire; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her five siblings and their spouses.
A memorial service in celebration of Janet's life will be held in Wallingford, CT in the Ashlar Village Auditorium at 2 pm on Saturday, May 11, 2013. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Janet's memory may be made to Masonic Charity Foundation, PO Box 70, Wallingford, CT 06492; or to First Congregational Church, 23 South Main Street, Wallingford, CT 06492; or to Hamden Plains United Methodist Church, 15 Church Street, Hamden, CT 06514. The B. C. Bailey Funeral Home of Wallingford has been entrusted with arrangements.
