Hello, Matt,
I knew your dad because he responded to my students' letters sent to the captain of an oil tanker through the Adopt a Ship program. Usually in this program the captain sends a reply to the class and shares information about the ship's journey for several months. This time the captain posted all the letters and your dad decided on his own to respond and send many photos to my fourth grade class. We started communicating and found out he lived in Connecticut when he wasn't at sea. I asked him if he would consider driving up to Cape Elizabeth, Maine, to meet the class as they were totally enthralled with his correspondence---so was I! He agreed and got up at the crack of dawn for the over 4-1/2 hour drive. On the way he had a problem with his muffler but somehow resolved it and arrived just a little later than planned.
Into the classroom he walked carrying a small case. He told the students he had a friend with him in the case and that the friend liked Peanut Butter cups. So he selected a student to drop a few of them in the case. He shook the case and opened it to a mass of empty wrappers! Very hungry friend it was! Your dad had attached big paper eyes on a very furry hat with flaps (perfect for Alaskan weather where he had just been)! There was a name for the friend which I now have forgotten as that first visit was at least twelve years ago.
Your dad came to Cape Elizabeth for at least five or six years in a row and every visit he brought with him a monkey fist keychain for every student---and some years when I was team teaching he made 45 to 50 keychains. For a few years Carol Carineux (sp?) from the L.A. Zoo came with him and they were quite the visitors, the kids loved having them. Your dad was the star of the show in so many wonderful ways--so much so that I twice had the local newspaper feature his yearly visits. Actually, SO much so that I badgered your dad for a contact with human resources at his ship's headquarters. My students and I learned an incredible amount from your dad's stories and experiences so I had to let his company know how he spent some of his time off the tanker---engaging kids in a meaningful way and inspiring them to follow their own dreams no matter what they decided to do in life. The company recognized your dad and gave him a monetary award.
I know your dad is up there looking at what I'm writing and just shrugging off any compliments, such a very modest man.My husband passed away unexpectedly in November 2011 but he had the pleasure of meeting your dad and talking with him often on the phone. When I retired in 2004 my husband kept urging me to call your dad but I didn't for too long of a time. When I did the year before last I found out that he was ill. I visited him the month after my husband passed away and I told him I would visit this past spring or summer. He said that would be great and to just give him a few days notice. A few times I called and then I emailed but I didn't get any answers.
I am devastated to find that he passed away and I cannot tell you how sorry I am to hear the sad news. I asked him what he thought of your wife-to-be at the time and he was so very pleased with her and so delighted with the wedding coming up.
My deepest sympathy to you, Matt. If you ever come to Maine, let me know, as I have many stories to share and some photos I could hunt down for you. I will always remember your dad's kindness, his unique humor and straightforward opinions, his keen intelligence, and especially his heartfelt support for me though his phone calls when my husband passed. It meant the world to me.
Sincerely,
Jill Bell

FAREWELL LETTER TO BILL
We were comprehended by very GREAT GRIEF: My best friend Bill Brokkett on July 18 died. Our friendship is about 20 years old. And it began in Batumi when Bill arrived to Ajara for the first time and all the unique time .
For Bill was enough some days of acquaintance with me to become very close on spirit the person.
Bill was unusual...... real PERSON of the WORLD. He had friends everywhere... not simply familiar, namely true friends! He was very erudite, versatily developed, a lot of and greedy reading, deeply knowing Russian literature and not only Russian, very keen and many-sided person with unusually acute sense of the humour, not deprived self-irony.
It was always interesting to be with him! And the focus of his interests was immense... I remember, how he sent me the photo of the patient autism of the unfamiliar girl and asked me to send any cards from Georgia that though somehow to brighten up her heavy life .... looked for the rest of the natural nearly 100 summer neigbour, entertaining her and installing in her optimism
At his house someone's dogs constantly lived and adored him, and he - them .... Bill was necessary to everyone... and he sufficed for all!!! Bill was the person with huge heart!!! And his friends became my friends on all my life.
After our that meeting in Batumi (then yet there was no Internet easily to communicate through it...) his friends came to Georgia on the humanitarian line of the United Nations and each time with a news and souvenirs from Bill.... and I with pleasure prepared for these meetings and prepared the gifts which were expensive to him too.... and with each arrival of humanitarian aid Bill's new and new friends were added all to me... and it meant that all they were the REAL people who won't betray and won't deceive... and which will offer a helping hand at a difficult moment.
The last years Bill felt not so well, but never spoke and didn't complain of the health. Having seen his last photos from wedding of his son Matthew, I long cried over them because read in his eyes his fast death... There were already eyes of the person standing on the verge between life and death. But in Bill's reaction to my excitement there was all Bill: he only laughed over my experiences and played a trick over me... and now, shortly before death Bill didn't allow his son Matt to write about the illness to the friends. I won't forgive myself never that wasn't going to write to Bill in recent days... this year was for me heavy emotionally... I his all cried, and only occasionally reported to him about the news and recognized him.... cheerful letters didn't turn out for me and to upset him I didn't want. ... and last weeks, I several times started to write to Bill, but I would like to tell very much for him that in English it was difficult for me to collect the thoughts, when on soul it is so heavy.
We, all his numerous friends, very much grieve over Bill and never we will reconcile to his such early leaving.
When there was a hunger in Georgia, Bill and his friends helped us... and I knew, while I have Bil, we won't die of hunger and cold. Such persons as Bill was are a little on the Earth, and we, his friends, consider ourselves as very happy people that was lucky for us to meet such person as Bill and though any time to feel his love and care on .
And though Bill lived in far America,my soul was quiet that I have a true friend who help and save ...which always will understand and will support.... and which will generously warm of of the soul's heat at any time.
Bill was the real man from capital letter! Beautiful, stately, graceful, thoroughbred.... and he was always frivolous and playful to himself relating! With him a row it was terrible nothing... because he for any was ready will rush both to fire and in water... and silently and without pathos... because differently he simply wasn't able....
because he simply wasn't able differently.... Bill did everything with all the heart... and as he was loved by colleagues - unanimously his friends! And how many time they played a

Matt, I knew your Dad through my friend Jim Flanagan. When we had dinner with your Dad long ago he prepared a delicious meal for us, we started with borsch! Nothing ordinary! I did get to share a good time with him just a few weeks ago with Jim. He was as beauiful to me as I knew him to be. How he loves you and honors you for all you have accomplished, he is a very proud Dad.I will always picture him at his table, ready for good conversation and a great meal. My prayers are with you and your family now. Bill will always be in my heart for his friendship and warmth. My love to you, Catherine McGarry

Stiill hard very much and still I and mym mum can't stopped tears. I've made new, very large photo albom with just Bill's photos and all the time we look and speak with him.
I never could imagine that Biil ( living so far from us and with whom we had a meeting just few times around 20 years ago would so close and such important for us.
For me was just enough that Bill was live and I had him in my life, such wonderful and sunny person !
Right now I don't know will I able to smile and be happy again ?
When I went in the bus to church to order a mass for the peace of Bill's soul, the unfamiliar musician guy came into the bus and sang the song to the accompaniment of a guitar .... according to him I understood that it was hello from Bill.... I stood in the bus and cried.,and anybody around didn't understand, why ?
Dear Bill, you will remain to live in my heart forever !
Your devoted friend Violetta Angelo ( from Batumi,Georgia)

Bill was a great person. We sailed together in the 70's at Getty Oil. I remember when his son was born. We caught up and sailed once again at ARCO Marine, then on through Phillips 66 & Polar Tankers. Bill was the greatest sailor I ever met.
Bill will be missed and will be forever in my prayers.

I will miss you Bill. I feel so privileged to have known you. You were an inspiration with that Irish grit but such a gentle loving heart so full of wisdom. You were courageous in the face of adversity and took the high road with a smile and gratitude. I will never forget the cannoli's you brought us every time you came in for your appointment. We all looked forward to seeing you and share the generosity of your heart.
Thank you for the lubanga (frankincense) that you gifted me from the Kings Road in Ethiopia. I can't begin to tell you how many times that lubanga was used in Earth Honoring Ceremonies and I always remembered you when I made the offerings. You leave a big legacy in this planet and Alan and I will miss not seeing you but your gentle smile will remain forever. Good Night friend!

We never said goodbye, Bill. I never thought we needed to. Surely, your indomitable spirit was seemingly going to carry you through forever. But, alas, this was not to be so. Your passing will leave a large void in my life after nearly 40 years of friendship. No longer will I see that wry smile, that dry sense of humor and those delicious cannolis that you brought to me and my office staff every time you came in for an appointment. It was an honor to be of service to such a wonderful human being.

Friends shouldn't die!!!
I can't reconcile to your leaving, dear Bill, such sudden and such early! You always mean for me and my mum so much and we were happy and proud to have so perfect friend as you are! You are very necessary to us! We love you
I never will forget your words to me that consider yourself as the happy and lucky person as after a fire of your house my photos and letters escaped only!
I will always remember together with my mum how you and Mitzi helped us in very difficult years for Georgia. I knew, while I have such friends as you are, we won't die of hunger and cold! Thank you, Bill and Mitzi, for your kind heart!
Dear Matthew and Beth, we condole with your grief and our souls and hearts are with you!
You are happiest among us, his close friends, therefore Bill spent the last for his days with you and was happy! We are grateful to you that you were near him and calmed his soul!
I very much hope that now Bill's all friends become also your close friends. Bill would be very glad for that!
Let's hang together memories of our favourite Bill and to remember him always!
