Obituary of Doris S. Athoe
WALLINGFORD - Doris S. Athoe, 96, of 22 Masonic Avenue, Wallingford, CT, formerly a resident of Lakeville, CT for over 40 years prior to moving to Cocoa, FL, entered into rest on December 23, 2011 at the Masonic Healthcare Center. She was born March 17, 1915 in Sheffield, MA, the daughter of Henry and Florence (Hall) Shook. She was the beloved wife of the late J. Kenneth Athoe.
Doris was a member of the Lakeville Hose Co. Fire Auxiliary, the Salisbury chapter of the D.A.R. and St. John's Episcopal Church. She was a 70 year member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Connecticut. In retirement, she and Ken lived in Cocoa, FL and Claverack, NY. While in Claverack, she was a member of Christ Church Episcopal, Hudson, NY. In 2000, Doris moved to the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford, CT.
Doris pursued many activities wherever she lived, including oil and acrylic painting, crafts, league bowling, and competitive shuffleboard. As a resident of the Masonic Healthcare Center, Doris was an active volunteer and a member of the Bell Choir.
Doris is survived by two daughters: Patricia A. Mullenix of Cocoa, FL and Audrey A. Wyman, of Claverack, NY; two sons: John K. Addu, of Claverack, NY and Peter D. Athoe of Vallejo, CA; grandchildren: Edwin L. Wyman, Jr. "Lee" (Vickie) of Dale City, VA, Jane L. Winston (Scott) of Lynchburg, VA, Donna A. Pleasant (John), Eric T. Wyman, Susan L. Chrostowski (Andrew), all of Cocoa, FL, Timothy M. Wyman (Emily) of Claverack, NY, Albert W. Wilson (Patty) of Rockledge, FL, Donald R. Addu of Raleigh, NC and Stacey Dell (Austin) of Lake City, FL; great grandchildren: Edwin L. Wyman III "Roy" (Jennifer), Melissa S. Elliott, Lorne K. Moore, Sabrina L. Madsen (Cory), Sydney Pleasant, Christopher T. Delhagen, Alex W. Delhagen (Jessica), Nicole L. Managroo (Creg), Carrie A. Humphery (Matthew), Colby L. Winston, Jacob C. Winston, Mackenzie L. Winston; eight great- great grandchildren, and several much loved nieces and nephews.
Doris was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, J. Kenneth Athoe, her daughter, Florence Lillian Athoe, three sisters; Anita Massey, Marjorie Harvey, and Minerva Thomas; four brothers, Raymond Shook, Harold Shook , John Shook, and George Shook.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held in the spring. Interment will be in the Lime Rock, CT cemetery at the convenience of the family.
