Obituary of Charlotte Pope Wallace
Charlotte Pope Wallace, 90, of Wallingford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at her home on Mapleview Road. For 58 years, she was the beloved wife of the late Floyd Wallace, who predeceased her in 2004.
Born in Allentown, PA on Aug.4, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Charlotte Pope as well as the sister of the late June Pope Pentecost and the late Rathburn Pope. Raised in Memphis, TN and Houston, TX, she graduated cum laude from Rice University in 1941. After college, she joined the WWII effort as a member of the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). After training in Northampton, MA, she was stationed in Key West, FL as a Lieutenant in charge of message decoding. There she met her future husband and love of her life, Floyd Wallace of Wallingford, also a Navy Lieutenant (JG). Married in 1946, the couple moved to Wallingford where they resided for most of the next 64 years.
Charlotte was a member of The First Congregational Church of Wallingford, the Gaylord Hospital Auxiliary and the Board of Ethics for the Town of Wallingford. She and her husband were committed to supporting several local institutions including Gaylord Hospital, the Wallingford Public Library, the First Congregational Church of Wallingford and the Wallingford YMCA. An avid tennis player until the age of 85, she was also an accomplished seamstress and a voracious reader.
She will be greatly missed by her five children and their spouses: Charlotte Anne (Charles) Barsano of Chicago, Helen Wells (Tom) Barrett of Wallingford, Floyd (Chris) Wallace of Wallingford, Patty (Mark) Willis of Simsbury and Carol Wallace (Michael Jewczyn) of Wallingford. Also mourning her passing are her eleven grandchildren: Carolyn, Christopher and Kevin Barsano; Matt and Maggie Bryson and Kate Wallace; Scott and Brett Willis; and Marika, Matt and Briana Jewczyn.
A memorial service will be held on Sept.18, 2010 at 11am at The First Congregational Church of Wallingford, 2 South Main Street, Wallingford.
