Obituary of Videen Parke McGaughey
Videen Parke McGaughey of Wallingford, wife of Dr. J. David McGaughey, died peacefully in hospice care at Masonic Healthcare on Saturday, November 27, 2010. She was 90 years old.
Born in Dublin, Ireland to Dr. David W. Parke and Elizabeth (Crampton) Parke, she arrived in Connecticut with her family at the age of three months, and grew up and attended public schools in Wallingford and Meriden. Valedictorian of her class at Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, N.Y., and a graduate of Southern Connecticut State College, Videen taught obstetrical nursing at schools affiliated with Methodist, Middlesex and Meriden Hospitals. She later joined Project ONE, where she specialized in oncology nursing and practitioner education, becoming an early proponent of hospice care.
In addition to her professional pursuits, Videen held leadership positions on the boards of a number of civic organizations, including the Wallingford PTA Council, Central Connecticut United Way, Wallingford YMCA, Wallingford Visiting Nurse Association, the League of Women Voters, the Connecticut Chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Christian Education Committee of the First Congregational Church, the Meriden-Wallingford Child Guidance Clinic, the South Central Regional Mental Health Board, Connecticut Hospice and the South Central Area Agency on Aging. She also served as vice chairperson of the Wallingford Republican Town Committee, was a member of the Charter Revision Commission that developed Wallingfords current municipal governing structure, and served on a task force appointed by Governor Ella Grasso to recommend improvements in State human service policy.
She met her husband, David, while he was a resident physician at the Meriden Hospital and she was an instructor at the hospitals School of Nursing. They married in 1948, settled in Wallingford, and raised three children. During her later years, Videen devoted much time to doting on her grandchildren and keeping track of the activities and accomplishments of the members of her extended family, including her many nieces and nephews.
Widely renowned as a baker of exceptionally good pies and cookies, she was equally well known for her generous spirit and compassion for others.
In addition to her husband, she leaves her children: James D. McGaughey and his wife, Betsy Hickcox, of Glastonbury; Videen M. Bennett and her husband, Christopher Bennett, of Ridgefield; and Heather P. McGaughey and her husband, John Wilmouth, of San Francisco; four grandchildren: Jonathan Bennett, Molly and Samuel McGaughey, and Evan Wilmouth; her brother, Dr. David Parke of North Branford; her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Don Tucker of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina; and her sisters-in-law, Evelyn McGaughey of Wallingford, and Marie S.
