Obituary of Norman Rieger
Norman W. Rieger Sr., born February 4, 1943 to the late Walter G. Anderson and Katherine Kelly Rieger, died Thursday June 17, 2010 at the Masonicare Health Center in Wallingford. He was 67.
He was born and raised in New Haven, CT and graduated from Hill House High School. He joined and served in the Navy Reserve before enlisting in the US Army from 1962-1965. He served as a radio operator in the Special Forces (Green Berets) and always wore his jump wings proudly. He was first employed at Sikorsky Aircraft and then as a police officer with the City of New Haven before an illness caused him to resign. He worked for the Southern CT Gas Company for over 27 years before retiring. He was also a charter member of the Cook Hill Volunteer Fire Station in Wallingford.
He was an avid hobbyist and enjoyed military history, wood working, photography, model trains, gun collecting, and target shooting.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Lynn C. Smith, three children; Norman W. Rieger Jr. of Hawthorne New Jersey, Jason R. Rieger and wife Julie of Wallingford, and Catherine C. Hesseltine and husband Mark of Durham, CT; 7 grandchildren; Brittany and Michael Rieger of Swansea, MA, Amanda G., Dominic, and Anthony Rieger of Wallingford, and Jake and Olivia Hesseltine of Durham, CT, a very special aunt, Margaret DeFonse of Hamden, CT and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Maureen Rieger of Wallingford. He was preceded in death by his brother Joseph H. Rieger.
Relatives and friends may call on at B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm Street, Wallingford on Tuesday June 22nd from 4:00 - 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday June 23rd at 10:00 AM at Church of the Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Rd., Wallingford. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery, Wallingford with military honors. Memorial contributions may be directed to a veteran organization of choice.
